Unacceptable reality: Many Houstonians are without access to basic health care services due to being uninsured or underinsured. 13.4% of US citizens, 23.5% of Texans and 30% of Houstonians are still uninsured today.
Unacceptable reality: It is estimated that approximately 600 children and adolescents are victims of forced sexual acts per night in Texas. Health care professionals are in need of training to recognize and help rescue victims.
Unacceptable reality: Up to 50% of children in Harris County are overweight or obese. Our patients suffer from co-morbidities of obesity due to the lack of access to good nutrition or adequate physical activity.
Unacceptable reality: Access to mental health services is limited and involves lengthy wait times for underserved populations in our community. Post-partum depression and psychosis often goes untreated in Texas.
Doctors for Change, was established in early 2006, became a 501c3 nonprofit organization in 2007, and has had a growing membership ever since. We believe that, as health professionals, we have a unique responsibility to address the problems of our health care system.
